Practice and Meditation

Integral Yoga, as taught by Sri Swami Satchidananda, offers a synthesis of six branches of classical Yoga: Hatha, Raja, Japa, Karma, Bhakti, and Jnana Yoga. Its aim is to purify and calm the body and mind in order to experience the peace and joy that is our true nature. Integral Yoga practitioners bring that peace into the world by fostering interfaith dialogue and leading service-oriented lives. Specifically the center offers: yoga and meditation classes, workshops, events, yoga teacher training, and yoga therapy. More information can be found on their website.

The Place

In 1969 the centre was founded and through the 1970's David Vijay Hassin was the Founding Director of the Integral Yoga Institute of San Francisco and the first Yogaville West community. He was one of a core group of students of Sri Swami Satchidananda when Sri Gurudev came to New York City and established the first Integral Yoga Institute. Since 2011 Swami Ramananda has been the Executive Director in San Francisco and a greatly respected senior teacher in the Integral Yoga tradition. The center is currently raising funds to be able to continue serving the community. The money will be used to maintain the urban sanctuary inside and out. Funds will also be used to increase the efficiency of resource use (energy, water, and materials) in the building and garden. They plan to replace the aging roof, add insulation to reduce heating costs, add solar panels to generate electricity, incorporate recycled materials to retrofit windows and doors, update bathrooms to reduce water, and consider gray water harvesting and composting for garden beds.
